There will be two speakers covering the topic, “What to Know Before an Individual Invests in or a Business Expands to the U.S.”:

1. Stanley Ruchelman, B.A., Hon. J.D.

2. Michael Peggs, Hon. B.A.

When a Canadian tax planner advises an individual client on a personal investment in the U.S., it is common for a U.S. tax adviser to comment on the scope of U.S. income, gift, and estate taxes. Sometimes the investment is made through a trust and other times it is made directly. Stanley Ruchelman answers 19 questions raised in the context of fact patterns often used.

When a Canadian tax planner advises a Canadian business on expanding activities to the U.S., the discussion often focuses on of subject the 20th and final question: transfer pricing matters. In this area, medium and small companies are often at a disadvantage in meeting the arm’s length standard and managing U.S. penalty risk. Michael Peggs will describe the unique challenges for mid-sized companies in planning, implementing, documenting, and managing controlled cross-border transactions and in dealing with tax authority controversy.

This event will be held at the Donalda Club.  The structure of the event is as follows:
